You’ve been contemplating whether you should do a boudoir session or not. Maybe you’ve heard about it from other women, saw your friend’s gorgeous photos, or discovered that your photographer offers boudoir sessions. I get how intimidating it might feel to get behind the camera, practically in the nude (or almost nude), and pose around with hopes of getting an amazing experience out of it all. But even though you thought about it long and hard (no pun intended lol) you’re still not sure if you have a good enough reason to do it.
Before I ever became a photographer or started getting into boudoir I used to think it was a bit silly to pose with lingerie on. I didn’t understand the reason behind it. Then once I truly got into the world of weddings and couples photography the two main reasons I saw people doing boudoir was to either gift it to their fiance or to spice things up in their marriage. I still didn’t realize there are countless reasons to have one done, until I fully dived into the world of boudoir.
I want to share some of the reasons I discovered why people do a boudoir session in the first place. There are so many reasons and here’s to name a few:
1. GIFT FOR A SPECIAL SOMEONE
As I mentioned above, this is probably one of the most popular reasons why a women feels lead to booking a boudoir session. It’s such a special treat for their significant other. Boudoir is a fun little gift you can offer, regardless if you’re surprising them on your wedding day, anniversary, or their birthday. It’s not something they would typically expect to be gifted. Boudoir sessions are also great for those in a long distance relationship or want to find a fun way to spice things up in your marriage. Whether your marriage is in a good place or not so great, I guarantee you that when your significant other gets a hold of those photos they will love it (think cartoon eyes popping out of their socket)! Plus, at the end of the session you realize that the boudoir session was a gift to yourself.
2. TO FEEL EMPOWERED
Maybe you’re on the path of self-love, just got out of an abusive relationship, or a nasty divorce. You could recently be a cancer survivor or just gave birth to the most precious baby. Boudoir sessions allow us women to reclaim our sexuality. Think about it: You walk into you’re photographer’s boudoir studio and after getting your hair and makeup done you have to strip down. You put on that sexy little lingerie you purchased online and then you step out to see your photographer standing there with their camera in hand. You’re in a vulnerable place and you’re trusting this complete stranger to capture all these amazing goddess like images. I’ve always said that you find your strength when you’re vulnerable. After you’re session you get to see those images of yourself just as you are (stretch marks and all) and see that you are an absolute gorgeous babe! You can’t help but feel like you can conquer the world. Society likes to tell us what we should look like; boudoir tells us that you’re beautiful just as you are! If that’s not empowering then I don’t know what is.
3. CELEBRATING A MILESTONE
Pop the champagne y’all! You probably just lost some weight or want to show off that gorgeous baby bump. Maybe there’s another milestone that you’d like to celebrate. Why not do a boudoir session? You’re photographer will more than likely be excited to celebrate with you!
4. JUST BECAUSE!
Do you really need a reason to book a boudoir session? One of my favorite sessions are when women do boudoir simply because they love it! I believe every woman should have a boudoir experience. They are tons of fun (especially if you book someone goofy like me) and you just feel like you’re on top the world.
In the famous words of Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek:
“Take a thousand naked pictures of yourself now. You may currently think, ‘Oh I’m too spooky’ or ‘Nobody wants to see these tiny boobies’ but believe me one day you will look at those pictures with much kinder eyes and say ‘Dear God, I was a beautiful thing!”
Let’s take her advice, cast all our fears to the wind, and book that session!
